A new alpha control panel puts search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps adjustments directly in your hands, ending years of black-box automation.
Performance Max campaigns have always run on a paradox: they're supposed to be fully automated, which means Google decides how much of your budget goes to Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Except when the algorithm's idea of 'best' isn't yours. You'd watch conversion volume spike on Search while Gmail bled money, but your only option was to kill the whole campaign and start over.
Google is testing a way out. A new alpha feature called 'Channels' lets Performance Max advertisers make positive or negative adjustments to individual channels without breaking the automation.
The feature gives you a control panel for Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. A positive adjustment tells Google it can relax its cost-per-action threshold for that channel, basically permission to bid more aggressively there. A negative adjustment tightens that threshold, so Google bids less and less as conversions fail to materialize.
You're not setting hard budget caps or pausing channels outright. You're turning dials that guide where the algorithm is willing to spend. Google still owns the math, but you own the direction.
For years, Performance Max advertisers have complained about invisible spend: budget flowing into channels that don't convert while high-performers starved. You could see the results in your conversion data but had no mid-campaign lever to fix it. This control panel closes that gap.
If you run a local service business, e-commerce operation, or any campaign with channel-specific ROI patterns, this is built for you. Maybe Maps drives qualified leads but Gmail burns through budget on clicks. Instead of pausing Gmail entirely and losing whatever signal Google built there, you can dial it down and let Search run hotter.
This is a notable admission from Google: Performance Max's core value proposition has always been 'trust the algorithm,' but the algorithm doesn't always match reality on the ground. By adding human-guided steering, Google is keeping the automation while giving you a way to correct course. It's a middle path between full manual control and total black-box optimization.
When this rolls out broadly, Performance Max campaigns will require a new layer of tuning: not just watching conversion volume, but watching channel-by-channel ROI and making adjustments to steer spend away from low-return channels. If you've been running Performance Max on set-and-forget, that playbook is about to change.
Pausing kills the algorithm's ability to learn across all channels; this adjustment relaxes or tightens what Google will spend on each channel while keeping the optimization engine alive. It's a way to guide without blinding.
Not automatically, a positive adjustment tells Google it can accept a higher CPA to bid in Search, so it will bid more aggressively there, but only if the conversion data justifies it. It's permission, not a hard dial.
Yes. A negative adjustment tells Google to tighten the CPA threshold for that channel, so it will bid less and less as conversions don't hit targets. You don't have to pause it entirely.
It's currently in alpha testing according to Google, so it's not live for most accounts yet. Watch your Performance Max settings panel for a 'Channels' section in the coming weeks.
